body image & dysmorphia

Many people struggle with body image concerns—ongoing dissatisfaction, self-criticism, or discomfort with their appearance. While body image concerns exist on a spectrum, they can significantly impact confidence, mood, and daily functioning.

In more severe cases, body image concerns may develop into body dysmorphia, or Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). BDD is a mental health condition in which a person becomes preoccupied with perceived flaws in their appearance. These concerns are often not noticeable to others, but they can feel very real and distressing.

Concerns about appearance can show up in various ways:

Emotional and cognitive

  • Persistent thoughts about perceived flaws or overall appearance

  • Intense distress, shame, or anxiety about how one looks

  • Strong belief that others are noticing or judging appearance

  • Low self-esteem tied closely to body image

Behavioural

  • Frequent mirror checking or, alternatively, avoiding mirrors

  • Excessive grooming or other attempts to “fix” perceived flaws

  • Reassurance seeking about appearance

  • Comparing appearance to others

  • Avoiding social situations, photos, or certain clothing

Impact on daily life

  • Difficulty concentrating at work or school

  • Withdrawing from relationships or activities

  • Spending significant time focused on appearance concerns

  • Pursuing cosmetic or dermatological procedures without lasting satisfaction

Body image problems and dysmorphia are both treatable with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which helps individuals reduce self-criticism, develop more balanced ways of thinking about their appearance, decrease avoidance or reassurance-seeking, and increase body acceptance or body neutrality. Treatment may also address related issues such as anxiety, depression, perfectionism, or disordered eating.
